Tumescent liposuction was developed by dermatologists in the late 1980s, and has revolutionized the field of liposuction surgery. It is performed as an outpatient procedure in our state-of-the-art procedure rooms under local anesthesia. It is important to note that general or intravenous anesthesia is not usually needed with liposuction as performed by our physicians, dramatically improving the safety profile of this remarkable procedure. Our physicians use precise treatments to remove carefully selected areas of fat. This new technique, often referred to as “liposculpture”, allows physicians to safely and effectively remove a precise amount of fat from almost any part of the body. It can permanently eliminate problem areas such as “saddle bags” or “love handles”. Other commonly treated areas include the abdomen, upper arms, outer and inner thighs, knees, neck, breasts, waistline, buttocks, and calves.

Dr. Ashish Bhatia was selected to be on the American Board of Dermatology’s question writing committee. He is a member of the committee responsible for reviewing and writing questions for the Board Certification Exam in Dermatology. All Dermatology residents must pass this national exam to become Board Certified.

Dr. Jeffrey Hsu received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama. This award is for recognition and appreciation for his commitment to servicing needs in his community.

Dr. Rebecca Tung led the team that created the Petals and Pearls: Inspiration and Wisdom from the Women’s Dermatologic Society. This is a book which is a compelling collection of inspiring stories, vignettes and advice from members of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. While the contributors are from the Dermatology field, the content is more far-reaching and is truly first of its kind. Women and men from across the world have joined together to share their stories on how they have weathered life’s turning points, struck a balance in family and work life, developed leadership in themselves and others, and given back within their communities. This new book arrives March 2010 at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting in Miami, Florida. More information on womensderm.org.
